According to the US Fire Administration, more Americans are killed by fire than by all natural disasters combined. Having an escape plan ready in case of a house fire can help keep you and your family safe.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An escape plan
  1. Step 1

Establish an escape route and an alternate escape route from the house for the entire family. The plan should include at least two exits from each part of the house and a place for the family to meet outside the house to ensure that everyone had escaped safely.

  2. Step 2

Occasionally hold fire drills to rehearse the escape plan. Make sure the children are a part of the drills. It is especially important that children understand how they can escape from a fire and not hide under a bed or in a closet.

  3. Step 3

Make sure all escape routes are clear from heavy furniture or other obstacles.

  4. Step 4

The fire department number, as well as all other emergency numbers, should be posted on every telephone in the house.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure is home is equipped with plenty of smoke detectors and change the batteries at least once a year.
  • Test your smoke detectors on a monthly basis.
