Things You'll Need:
- an open mind
-
Step 1
Reduce the sheer numbers of roaches in your house by keeping it clean, uncluttered and free of food scraps and standing water. This will make loving them more bearable.
-
Step 2
Keep all your food stored away safely. If the roaches aren't eating your food, it's harder to get mad at them.
-
Step 3
Meditate on your relationship to the roaches. Why do they bother you? Why do they seem grosser to you than other bugs do?
-
Step 4
Remember that you both have to find a place to live on this earth. Why should one of you be more "deserving" of this living space than the other? How much damage have humans done to the planet compared to cockroaches?
-
Step 5
Begin referring to them as "cute," and make up names for them. This will help you get over your irrational disgust at them. Remember, they are much life beetles, including those charming ladybugs.

on 4/25/2009 I actually did #5 with spiders. (My kids were little.) When we found a spider, I called it "Peter" for Peter Parker, or "Charlotte." I put a cup over it and a piece of paper under it, and gently let it outside. (I didn't do the same for black widows or scorpions, though!) 5*

on 1/19/2009 Cochroaches are all over downtown Montreal. Pleasant memories of the ghetto by McGill University....oooh. Good luck with or without them.
