Pendulum divining, also known as scrying or dowsing is an age old art that was typically handed down from mother to daughter. As time has gone by many of the meanings associated with the pendulum have been forgotten, in fact – many people consider it a “game” for detecting the sex of an unborn child. But the pendulum can be used for much more and is an accurate tool for divining.

Divination is highly personal, the meanings given here are what I have learned in my 27 years of pendulum scrying – you may interpret things differently! Now, onto the good stuff!

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pendulum
  • Patience
  • Journal or Log (optional)
  • Belief/Confidence
  1. Step 1

If you don’t yet have a pendulum, look around the house and put one together! You can use a needle and thread or something heavier (recommended), such as a washer attached to yarn. Beautiful pendulums can be found in metaphysical shops and online, most are reasonably priced.

  2. Step 2

Some people will ground and center before beginning this step and others will cast a circle, either a large one that encompasses the whole area you will be sitting in or a small one confined to the radius the pendulum will be in – and still others do nothing at all in preparation! Pendulum divination is highly personal, so do what feels best for you!

In my experience, the best way to learn how to use a pendulum is start with your own “signature”! Hold the pendulum by the chain in your dominant hand, leaving 4 to 5 inches dangling over your wrist. As you are holding the pendulum feel or sense energy coming from it, perhaps this is a tingle in your fingers, maybe it is represented by light or in some other way. However you sense the energy, know that it is there and believe in it; have the confidence to allow the pendulum to do what it will.

  3. Step 3
    Yes and No

    Yes and No

Watch as the pendulum begins to move, when detecting your own “signature” the pendulum will typically circle clockwise for a few turns and then set into moving across your wrist in horizontal, vertical and diagonal sweeps. At the end, most often the pendulum will again return to circling clockwise in reducing sweeps until it stops. Many believe that these sweeps are indicating the children you will have if you continue on the path you are currently on. See the tips section for more information on this.

  4. Step 4

Play around with the pendulum a bit until you grow comfortable with it. That done it’s time to ask some questions! Remember that you must use questions that require a “yes” or “no” answer unless you have made or purchased charts for your reading.

Ask if anybody is there, if your pendulum starts to move go ahead and calibrate it, for more on calibration see the tips section or just assume that “yes” is vertical and “no” is horizontal, as they generally are. You may notice that the pendulum is quivering slightly and may even pull slightly from the unseen force controlling it. Don’t worry about movements from your arm; you would really have to rock it a lot before you would upset the results. And if you do sneeze or something feel free to ask the pendulum to repeat itself!

You may also find that it’s nice to keep a log of your sessions, that way you can come back to your past readings whenever you feel the need!

  5. Step 5

I hope that you have found pendulum dowsing to be rewarding and fun! But if you are having trouble, don’t worry! It will get easier over time!

Be sure to check out the tips and warnings section of this article! I’ve added a lot of great tidbits down there, including how to talk to loved ones who have passed and using the pendulum to find spirits (similar to an EMF detector), plus additional information related to interpreting the pendulum!

Tips & Warnings
  • ABOUT YOUR SIGNATURE: Your signature is the vibration of your soul, pendulums can pick up on this and so can certain clairvoyants. Have you ever heard of the psychic that can tell things about a person just by holding and item that belongs to them? He or she is actually picking up on imprints left by that person’s vibration or “signature”. Why not try it out? You can go around the house and hold your pendulum over the belongings of other family members and you’ll find that the pendulum will behave differently based on who the item belongs to.
  • When divining, it’s important to remember that nothing is set in stone! I once incorrectly believed that a person’s “signature” never changes, and then I made a huge life altering change and found that my “signature” changed just as much!
  • CALIBRATE YOUR PENDULUM: As dowsing is highly individual, it’s a good idea to calibrate your pendulum by asking it to indicate yes, no, male, female, male twins, female twins, etc. That way you will know the meanings as they are presented to you. All of the meanings given in the tips section are “general”, meaning that you may interpret differently.
  • VERTICAL: A vertical swing indicates YES or FEMALE.
  • HORIZONTAL: If you find your pendulum swinging in a horizontal fashion this indicates NO or MALE.
  • CLOCKWISE: Rotation swings can be difficult, in the case of a “signature” swing it can be a time indicator for when things come will come to pass if you remain on your current path. If you’re asking questions of the pendulum and you get a clockwise swing instead of “yes” or “no” the meaning is usually “huh?” or “don’t know”, you may need to ask additional questions for clarification. This sort of a swing can also indicate that you have asked more than one question at a time.
  • COUNTER CLOCKWISE: Careful! There are two possible meanings for a counter clockwise swing! If you are looking at a “signature” and your pendulum changes from clockwise to counter clockwise, this can indicate that there is a change coming in your future. If you happen to be asking questions of the pendulum and you notice that the pendulum is swinging counter clockwise you may be talking to a benevolent or unfriendly spirit.
  • CHARTS: You aren’t limited to yes or no questions with your pendulum! You can purchase, or make your own charts with letters and numbers for all of your dowsing needs!
  • When asking questions of your pendulum it’s always polite to ask “is anybody there?” and greet them when they say they are. Don’t forget to say goodbye as well!
  • TALKING WITH THE DEAD: If you have a loved one that has passed, it may be possible for you to communicate with them through the pendulum, it would be good to have a chart that you’ve purchased or made for this kind of communication, otherwise you have to keep your questions to “yes” and “no” answers. Cup your pendulum in your hand and imagine the person you want to talk to, get a link on them by feeling in your heart that area that their memory resides, focus on how they made you feel. Once you feel ready you can begin asking questions, be sure to ask if someone is there, greet them and then ask appropriate questions to determine who they are. I have contacted three relatives who have died in my lifetime in this way and several that died before I was born, one as far back as the 1600’s!
  • GHOST HUNTING: You can use you pendulum to detect spirits and portals in your home as well. Walk slowly around your home and watch the pendulum swing, slow, shallow turns means that you are far away from the spirit or portal, wide, fast swings indicate you are nearby! You can also detect intent as well by watching for clockwise or counter clockwise swings.
  • Letting the pendulum “do what it will” is the part that many people have trouble with; they worry about what is moving the pendulum. Nervousness and fear can prevent scrying from working. If you are having difficulty in this area you should calm yourself and try again, or maybe the art of the pendulum isn’t for you.
  • It is possible to make contact with “evil” spirits as well as human spirits that were once alive. Be aware that when you are asking questions it’s possible that you may not receive the truth.
  • If you begin to feel overwhelmed it is best to say “goodbye” and put the pendulum away until later.

on 3/11/2009 My grandfather was known to never be wrong when divining for water. I've used a pendulum to predict the gender of all 3 of my children, and it was correct!

on 3/11/2009 I've used this thing for fun to ask questions and have gotten answers from myself when I was younger. It can have some benefits if you understand the subconscious and generally have a positive attitude. Since as you state you can call on negative energy as I'd refer to it more than "evil" spirits. Nice to share your thoughts on this in this article.
