Things You'll Need:
- bird seed
- bird feeders
- bird houses
- bird bath/water source
- pine cones
- peanut butter
-
Step 1
Buy bird seed. There are various blends of bird seeds, depending on the types of birds you wish to attract. A ten pound bag of bird seed can run anywhere from $5-15, depending on the blend you buy. There are also blends that are specifically designed for deck and patio feeders to reduce the chances of seed growth from spilled seeds.
-
Step 2
Put out a bird bath or other water supply. Birds, like all living things, require water and will congregate where there is a readily available source. To keep water from becoming stagnant, install a dripper on your bird bath or water source.
-
Step 3
Plant bushes, trees, or other plants. Birds need a safe place to hide and high places to perch where they feel protected from predators. Different species of birds prefer different plant types. Planting native plant species is always a good idea when trying to attract birds.
-
Step 4
Add bird houses and bird feeders to various locations around your property. Inexpensive bird houses and feeders can be purchased just about anywhere. Walmart and Lowe's seem to carry a large and inexpensive variety.
-
Step 5
Tie up peanut butter and bird seed covered pine cones to provide a great source of winter nutrition to wild birds. Just gather a few pines cones, tie string around the narrow end, cover the pine cones surface with peanut butter and then roll it in bird seed. This treat provides the fat that bird seed alone may not provide. Hang the cone from a tree or anywhere else in your yard.
