An exercise mat is something everyone should have who is serious about getting into shape. They protect the knees, ankles and feet by absorbing a lot of the shock. They also provide extra comfort when performing back and stomach exercises. Since there are so many different types of styles on the market, this article explains what you should know when you choose your own exercise mat.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Good shoes
  • Water
  1. Step 1

Look at your available space. Do you have a room dedicated to working out, or do you have limited space. If you plan on storing your exercise mat after each session, buy one that folds in the middle instead of one that rolls. The rolling variety tends to flip up and gets quite annoying.

  2. Step 2

Buy an exercise mat with a handle. This way you can take it to the gym, or to your friend's house quite easily. If you buy one that folds, it resembles a briefcase.

  3. Step 3

Make sure the exercise mat you choose is waterproof. Not only should you expect to sweat during your workout, but the water you drink could also spill. If you don't have something waterproof, it will quickly deteriorate.

  4. Step 4

Consider buying a more permanent, interlocking exercise mat if you plan on doing real, stand up, physical work that requires a large space. Typically these are skid resistant and absorb maximum shock. Many gyms have them.

Tips & Warnings
  • An exercise mat is not the only requirement when it comes to safety. Make sure you have a shoe that fits just right to prevent injury as well.
