Things You'll Need:
- Good shoes
- Water

Step 1
Look at your available space. Do you have a room dedicated to working out, or do you have limited space. If you plan on storing your exercise mat after each session, buy one that folds in the middle instead of one that rolls. The rolling variety tends to flip up and gets quite annoying.
-
Step 2
Buy an exercise mat with a handle. This way you can take it to the gym, or to your friend's house quite easily. If you buy one that folds, it resembles a briefcase.
-
Step 3
Make sure the exercise mat you choose is waterproof. Not only should you expect to sweat during your workout, but the water you drink could also spill. If you don't have something waterproof, it will quickly deteriorate.
-
Step 4
Consider buying a more permanent, interlocking exercise mat if you plan on doing real, stand up, physical work that requires a large space. Typically these are skid resistant and absorb maximum shock. Many gyms have them.
