Even if you are an amateur artist the beauty of painting with oils is evident. Through these step by step instructions you will be able to paint a rose, by any other name it will still be as sweet!

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sketch pad
  • Pencil
  • Canvas
  • Drawing ink pen
  • Oil paints - Flake White, Yellow Ochre Light, Red Ochre, Burnt Umber, Ivory Black, Madder Lake Deep, Chinese Vermilion Extra, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Light Ocher, Prussian Blue
  • Brushes
  • Cover Varnish
  1. Step 1

First lightly draw the rose in pencil on the canvas and then draw it out in ink. Then you apply the first oil layer, which is called Imprimatura and it must have a neutral olive hue. You choose how light or dark you want this layer depending on the largest light area of the finished painting. Let this layer dry.

  2. Step 2

The next layer is the Umber Under layer and it is done with burnt Umber, in order to facilitate work in the previous layer. This is to set the tonality. Let this layer dry and then apply the Dead Under layer. It is made with Flake White, light ocher, red ocher, burnt Umber, Prussian Blue, and Ivory Black. this layer should produce a olive cold gray color. Light are applied thickly and shadows are very transparent.

  3. Step 3

After the Dead Under layer dries you can move on to the color layer. This is where you should make shadow areas darker, lighter areas lighter and the both of them more colorful. In the light areas use more paste-like mixtures.

  4. Step 4

The last step is the finishing layer. Here is where you detail the textures, thickly apply highlights, bright reflections, and your signature. Chinese vermilion extra, cadmium yellow deep, and madder lake deep can be used here. After you dry your painting for six months apply the cover varnish.

Tips & Warnings
