If you do not have a software program that cleans your computer, you may need to use what Windows XP has built into their software package. They have an option called Disk Cleanup that will get rid of some unnecessary buildup that has accumulated on your PC over time. This should be done at least once every couple of weeks to ensure your computer runs at maximum efficiency. Here are the steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin by clicking on Start and then go to All Programs.

  2. Step 2

Look for Accessories in the menu that appears. Depending on how many programs you have in your computer, it may be a little difficult to find, but it will be somewhere in this menu that pops up. It is usually near the top.

  3. Step 3

When you hover over Accessories, another menu will pop up. Pick System Tools from this menu.

  4. Step 4

From System Tools go to Disk Cleanup. Click on Disk Cleanup. A pop up window will come up that tells you it is scanning. The more files you have, the longer it will take to complete. It is usually a less than 5 minute process.

  5. Step 5

It will tell you how much you can clean up (Usually just temporary Internet files). Click OK. It will then ask you if you are sure. If you are sure, click Yes. This only gets rid of unnecessary accumulation.

  6. Step 6

You can also click on More Options which will let you get rid of unnecessary Restore Points or Installed Programs that you no longer use. You must be sure about these options. Make sure you no longer use programs before uninstalling them.
