How to Child Proof Household Goods

Children are delightful and bring much joy. But how much joy do they bring when they show their talent as a budding artist on your living room walls? How about when they knock over a family heirloom? Children are inquisitive and love to explore the world around them. Your prized household goods can be just as fascinating to them as they are to you. This gives reason to childproof your home to protect not only your household goods, but the child as well. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Assess your home. Get down on the child's level and crawl around each room in your home. This will help you to see things from a child's perspective. Take note of anything that could cause harm to a child. Be sure to keep your floor clean of debris or items that a child could easily place in their mouth. Make sure cords from blinds are not hanging within a child's reach.

    • 2

Keep an off-limits room. This is for your valuable household goods. Keep the door to that off-limits room closed. Put covers on the door knobs to prevent the child from being able to open the door. Only allow the child to enter this room with supervision.

    • 3

Bolt furniture to the wall. If you have a flat screen TV, mount it into a stud in the wall. If you have a tall dresser in your child's room or in another part of your house, bolt that to the wall as well. Make sure that heavy things are placed in the bottom drawers so that your dresser will not be too top heavy.

    • 4

Invest in child safety latches, locks and gates. Put latches on the doors of all cabinets containing liquid products and medications. Place child safety locks on your entertainment system doors to keep your electronic items childproof. Use gates in front of stairs, fireplaces and areas that are off limits.

    • 5

Keep arts and crafts out of reach from children. This includes crayons, markers, pens, Play-Doh and other crafts that can ruin furniture, flooring and walls. It may help to buy washable markers for use whenever doing creative projects. Use protective mats when doing crafts so that you don't stain your flooring. Do not allow children to use these items unattended.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep emergency numbers close by in case of an accident.

  • Have someone to check your home after you have evaluated it to make sure you didn't miss anything.

  • Continue to re-evaluate your home as your child grows older.

  • Though these tips will be helpful in protecting your household goods, the most important thing is to make sure that children are properly supervised when they are at your home. Do not let children go unattended.
