Make Comforter Cover

Comforter covers have both practical and ornamental uses. While it is difficult to stuff an entire comforter into a standard washing machine, a cover is easy to remove and toss in the washer and dryer. If your comforter is made of cool cotton, a flannel cover will make it winter-ready. If you change your bedroom decor and the comforter no longer complements the room, you can make a cover out of a more coordinating fabric. Spend an afternoon creating your custom comforter cover and enjoy it for years to come. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of your comforter. Add four inches to the length and two inches to the width to allow room for the seam and so that the comforter fits inside the cover easily.

    • 2

Choose quality fabric. You will want something that feels nice against your skin and wears well so that it will last. Consider buying two different fabric colors that coordinate with your room's decor. This way you can flip it over for a different look. You will more than likely have to stitch lengths of fabric together to have large enough pieces. Do so using a French seam, which will enclose the seam, giving it a smoother appearance (see Resources for French seam instructions).

    • 3

Place the two lengths together, right side in. Pin them to each other so they do not slip or come apart. Stitch the two long sides and one of the shorter ends together with about a quarter-inch seam.

    • 4

Clip a small angled edge off each corner so that the corners will not be bunched up when you open it. Turn the cover right side out.

    • 5

Create a method of closure on the open end. Cut button holes on one side and attach large matching buttons, glue or sew on Velcro strips or snaps, or sew sets of ribbon or strips of leftover fabric to make ties on the end.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sew or glue on lace, fringe or a ruffle for added embellishment.
