Make a quilt from baby clothing and accessories.

Make a quilt for a new mother from the clothes she wore in her first year of life for a keepsake gift that can be passed down for generations. If you cannot find her baby clothes, purchase some diaper shirts, sundresses and other simple items from a discount or secondhand store and personalize the quilt with a hand-embroidered monogram of the baby's name, initials or date or birth.

Things You'll Need

  • Baby clothes
  • Soft tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Sewing needle (or sewing machine)
  • Thread
  • Lining fabric

Instructions

    • 1

Make a template for the quilt squares. Draw either a 4-inch square or a 6-inch square on a piece of posterboard or cardboard and cut it out. Lay the clothing on your working surface and draw squares on each item to use for the quilt. Cut out the squares. To make a 36-inch by 48-inch quilt, you will need 108 4-inch squares or 48 6-inch squares.

    • 2

Lay the fabric squares on your working surface and arrange them into a 36-inch by 48-inch rectangle for the quilt. When using 4-inch squares, make the rectangle nine squares across and 12 squares down. When using 6-inch squares, make the rectangle six squares across and eight squares down.

    • 3

Sew each square to the adjoining squares with a whip stitch.

    • 4

Cut the lining fabric to the size of the quilt. Use a soft fleece fabric for a winter quilt or a light cotton blend fabric for warmer weather. Place the lining fabric on top of the quilt with the wrong sides together. Sew the layers together with a straight stitch around the outside edges.

    • 5

Cut two pieces of double-fold bias binding tape to the length of the quilt. Cut two additional pieces to the width of the quilt. Cut each end on a 45-degree angle to keep the edges from overlapping.

    • 6

Insert one 48-inch-long side of the quilt in between the fold of one 48-inch-long piece of the binding tape and pin it in place. Slide the remaining sides of the quilt into the folds in the correct pieces of binding tape and pin in place. Sew the binding tape to the quilt with a simple straight stitch.
