Things You'll Need:
-
Step 1
Decide where you intend to place your string lights. The lights do not need to be in the sun for them to work. They come with a small solar panel that does need a lot of sunlight, so place the panel in an appropriate location. If your panel is in the shade, your solar lights will be dim. Read and follow the instructions on the light kit carefully.
-
Step 2
Place the lights where you want them to be in your garden if they are easily accessible as you add your unique designs. If the lights will be placed somewhere that you cannot easily reach them to attach the copper, string them out on a table or the floor for better access.
-
Step 3
Determine which shape you prefer for your copper additions. The lights are small, so your addition also be sized so as to not overwhelm the light. You can use cookie cutters to find a shape you like or create a template from just about anything.
-
Step 4
Trace the shape onto a piece of your craft copper. This is sold in small rolls in your local hobby store and sometimes in your hardware store.
-
Step 5
Cut out the copper shape for your solar lights. The copper is thin so it cuts rather easily, but you still need a pair of sharp scissors. You may not wish to create a shape for every single light bulb. You could choose to illustrate every other bulb or add your copper to every third bulb. This is your design so make the string lights look the way that pleases you.
-
Step 6
Make two holes, side by side, at the base of your copper shape using your hammer and a nail. You only need a large enough opening to thread the wire through, so measure your nail against the wire you are using. If you chose a flower or dragonfly design, you may wish to have the light bulbs in the center, so make the holes accordingly.
-
Step 7
Thread a small piece of wire through your holes and attach the copper to the solar string lights. Make the lights shine in front of the copper or behind the copper as you like.
