Things You'll Need:
- shopping list
- money
- planning
-
Step 1
Plan. Plan your trip to the grocery store well ahead of time. A good place to start is to plan your upcoming meals and weekly menu. Then check your pantry to see what you have and what you need.
-
Step 2
Make a Shopping List. Add the ingredients that you need to your shopping list. Include staples that you may be running low on and things you need around the house. Go from room to room to check for paper goods and cleaners you might be running low on.
-
Step 3
Shop Once a Week. To save money, shop once a week with your list in hand. Frequent trips often include impulse buys that can rack up the dollars at the cash register. Only shopping once a week can also keep your healthy eating on track by only buying the items you need. If you like to buy fresh produce and milk in between, be sure that's all you leave the store with.
-
Step 4
Shop Smart. Shop around the perimeter of the store as much as possible. This is where the fresh foods are located: meat, fish, dairy, produce. Check the store's weekly sales flier to buy items that are on sale that week. Freeze meat and other foods that are on sale to use later.
-
Step 5
Enjoy Shopping. Go to the grocery store when you enjoy it. If that means going on a busy Saturday morning, do that. If you would rather have empty aisles to meander through the store, go in the morning on a week day or a Saturday evening. Make your shopping trip enjoyable and you'll shop smart.
