You can crochet a washcloth with a simple double crochet stitch. They make excellent gifts! Pair them with some homemade all natural soaps or bath salts and you would have a gentle gift perfect for a new baby or anyone that wants a little extra pampering! All the washcloths in the photo above were made using Peaches & Creme 100% cotton worsted weight yarn. This yarn is available at most discount or department stores carrying craft items. The cotton yarn just gets softer and softer each time you use the washcloths. They are also perfect for cute bathroom decor! You can enlarge any of the photos in this article by clicking on them.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a slip knot in your yarn. For more information on tying a slip knot see the resource section below.

    • 2

      Row 1: Chain 25 stitches.

    • 3

Row 2: Turn and beginning in the top of the 4th chain stitch from the hook begin double stitching. (You skipped 3 chain stitches.) Double crochet back across your chain until you reach the end of the chain.

    • 4

Row 3: Chain 2. Turn your work. Beginning in the both top loops of the first double crochet continue to make a double crochet stitch until you reach the end.

    • 5

Repeat Row 3 for 13 rows or until your work is square. Use a ruler to measure the dimensions to be sure. When you have double crocheted enough rows to make a square washcloth, you can single crochet around the edge of the washcloth for a finished look. Do this by chaining once. Turn your work. Single crochet around the edge of the washcloth making two single crochets at each corner in the stitch below instead of just one. When you have gone all the way around, tie off the loose end of yarn by using a slip stitch and then tying a knot.

In addition to being wonderful as gifts, or for your own personal care, these washcloths make super cute bathroom decor. Simply use them as you would a doily.

You can also try a variation which alternates the rows of double crochets with a triple crochet stitch. The blue and white washcloth in this photo was stitched alternating double and triple crochets, while the yellow washcloth to the right is simply double crocheted.
