Hummingbird feeders need to be cleaned out at least once a week to prevent mold and bacteria growth. But the narrow necks of many styles of feeders make cleaning very difficult.

Here are a few tips to clean your narrow-necked hummingbird feeder and keep your feathered friends happy and healthy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Uncooked Rice
  • Tooth Brush
  • Tooth Pick
  • Vinegar
  1. Step 1

Unscrew the reservoir from the feeder part - this will vary depending on the style of hummingbird feeder you have. Dump left over nectar in the sink.

  2. Step 2

Rinse with hot water. Fill the feeder reservoir half full with hot water, a splash of vinegar and a handful of uncooked rice. Close the opening of the reservoir with your thumb and shake vigorously. The rice will scrub the inside of the glass.

  3. Step 3

Empty the feeder and thoroughly rinse the reservoir to remove all traces of vinegar.

  4. Step 4

Clean the feeder ports with hot water and a toothbrush. Use a toothpick to remove any gunk from the crevices of the feeder.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have a feeder with a wide neck opening, cleaning is much easier. Use a bottle brush with the hot water and vinegar solution.
  • Be sure to remove all the vinegar from the feeder before refilling it.
