Measuring for roller shades is not as hard as it looks. Shades can be installed as either an inside or outside mount, depending on the window itself and your preference. Follow the steps below in measuring for an inside mount.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Steel tape measure

INSIDE MOUNT APPLICATION: Using a steel tape measure, measure the exact width of the window opening at the TOP of the window. You will measure from the inside top edge of the window frame, left to right. Write down that size making sure that it is the first number of the measurement. This is the width you will order.

  2. Step 2

Next, measure the exact height from the top inside edge down to the window sill/window bottom in THREE places: left, middle, right. Take the largest/longest of the three measurements. Write down that size making sure that it is the second number of the measurement. This is the height you will order.

  3. Step 3

Lastly, gather the measurements you took and head to your local or online store and buy the roller shades you've always wanted! Give yourself a pat on the back!

Tips & Warnings
  • "Most" roller shades will come with an extra 12” of fabric to conceal the roller.
  • Width and length measurements may vary +/- 1/8”
  • CHECK FOR PROPER MOUNTING DEPTH: Inside mounts require a minimum window depth to properly mount a blind or shade. If the depth of your window casing is not equal to or greater than the minimum mounting depth, you will need to measure for an outside mount application.
  • (See "How To Measure Roller Shades-Outside Mount Application")
  • INSIDE MOUNT APPLICATION: The Inside Mounting Depth is the minimum depth required to mount the roller shade as an inside mount. NOTE: A portion of the blind or shade may protrude from the window opening, depending on how deep your casing is.
