Extend the Life of Your Car's Engine

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Diligence
  • Awareness
  • Effort
  1. Step 1

Change Oil Regularly - Changing your car's engine oil on a regular basis is the single most effective step that you can take to extend the life of your car's engine. Motor oil is the life blood of a car's engine. Dirty oil is less capable of doing what oil is supposed to do: lubricate and cool. Be a nice, thoughtful car owner and change your car's engine oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first.

  2. Step 2

Drive Like a Gentleman - Squeeling your car's tires and jackrabbit starts may sound and look cool, but these are some of the worst things that you can do to your car's engine. These types of driving habits overly strain your engine and cause wild fluctuations in engine RPM and engine heat - things that can quickly erode an engine's life expectancy. Be a sport: drive like a gentleman!

  3. Step 3

Check Fluids Regularly - Oil and water(antifreeze) are responsible for cooling and lubricating the delicate inner workings of your car's engine. Heat and friction are the great destroyers of all car engines. Therefore, it makes perfect sense to regularly check and fill(when needed) your car's engine oil and radiator fluid. Make it a point to check these things at least once a month.

  4. Step 4

Keep Your Car in Tune - a properly tuned engine, along with all of its supporting systems, is an engine that will last. Having your car serviced or tuned-up on a regular basis will go a long way towards extending your engine's life and keeping it running smoothly and efficiently. Ignition timing, fuel injection service, and spark plugs and wires - these are just a few of the engine components and systems that require frequent service.
