What to do when you think you have the stomach flu...

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a bed
  • clear fluids
  • thermometer
  • trashcan or bucket
  1. Step 1

    Get Plenty of Rest...
Your body needs plenty of rest to keep up your energy while dealing with vomiting and/or diarrhea. Sleep and lay down as much as possible. Definitely call in sick for work, for both your benefit and others.

  2. Step 2

    Give your Bowels a Break...
Do not consume anything but clear fluids until it has been a few hours since you have vomited and you are tolerating the fluids. Water, light colored juices and broth work great. Some people prefer either cold or warmed fluids.

  3. Step 3

    Stay Hydrated...
Make sure you are trying to consume a few sips of water or juice every 15-30min (stomach tolerating...). Things can go downhill really fast if you get dehydrated. After you start tolerating things better, add a little more fluids.

  4. Step 4

    Call a doctor if...
Your symptoms last longer than 1-3 days (average lifespan of normal stomach flu).
If you see blood in your vomit or stool.
These could be signs of something more serious and you should notify your physician. Do not take any pain relievers, they could complicate things ever further, but some people report feeling better with over the counter stomach remedies like Pepto, Mylanta or Immodium.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make life easier... Bring a trash can or bucket near where you are laying to eliminate the running trips to the bathroom, especially if you have stairs to conquer
