How to Start and Run a Soup Kitchen for The Homeless

How to Start and Run a Soup Kitchen for The Homeless thumbnail
Soup kitchens were first established during the Great Depression.

Soup kitchens are operated by non-profit charitable organizations such as women's groups, churches and homeless shelters. They provide free meals to less fortunate people who are not able to provide for themselves. This is often times the only well balanced meal available to homeless people. You can support your community by running a local soup kitchen serving meals daily, weekly or monthly.

Instructions

    • 1

Incorporate as a non-profit charitable organization. Contact your local or state charity registration office to complete the necessary paperwork. You may also operate your soup kitchen under a current non-profit agency such as a local church.

    • 2

Locate a facility from which to serve your meals. Select a location that can easily be accessed by those in need. Churches or community centers may have a facility that you can use. Check with your local zoning board regarding restrictions and inspections. Your kitchen may require inspections from the health department before you can begin preparing and serving meals.

    • 3

Gather monetary and food donations for your soup kitchen. Church members, businesses, community organizations and non-profit charitable organizations may financially support your effort. Contact local restaurants, bakeries, produce markets and grocery stores for donations of surplus food. Donations to non-profit charitable organizations are tax deductible.

    • 4

Compile a list of volunteers willing to help with your soup kitchen. Set a schedule and assign specific duties to each volunteer. Create a group responsible for collecting both monetary and food donations, a group responsible for preparing the meals, one responsible for serving the meals and a team responsible for talking to the homeless or other charitable organizations to spreading the word regarding your soup kitchen.
