After you have decided to adopt a cat from a shelter, you must find the right cat to fit your lifestyle and interests. How do you know just what cat is right for you?

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The volunteers and staff at a shelter are your go-to guides. They want the best outcome from an adoption, so feel free to be honest with what you expect from a cat. Let them know if you want a lazy lapcat or a certified mouser or frisky kitten. These people spend a lot of time around the animals, and they can let you know if there is a particular cat that fits your profile. Feel free to ask questions!

  2. Step 2

Spending time with the animals is perhaps the most crucial part of choosing a compatible cat. Think about how you are expecting to interact with your cat when it comes to live in your home. Do you plan on carrying him/her around? Try holding each potential feline in that way. Some cats do not like to be held. Test the cats to see if one seems to shoe particular affection for you or not. If you want a lovey dovey new friend, s/he should probably approach you when you stand by his/her cage.

  3. Step 3

Make sure you aren't choosing an animal based ONLY on looks. It's important that you keep an open mind. If you have a particular idea of what you want your cat to look like, that is fine, but you have to be willing to wait longer to try and find the right one. For example, if you want a bengal cat, and you will only adopt a bengal cat, then you have to meet a lot of bengal cats in order to find one whose personality matches yours. Don't just take the prettiest cat that comes along and assume that it will fit into your family.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember that a shelter can be a very stressful place for cats, so go easy on them! There are many confusing sights, sounds, and smells as well as people and animals constantly coming and going. Keep in mind when you interact with the cats that this might not be their true personalities. They are stressed out!
