Moss looks pretty on a roof top but it will ruin your roofing shingles over time. Here is the method I use to kill and remove moss from an asphalt shingled roof.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two or three gallons of Chlorox bleach
  • A drill with a small 1/8th
  • drill bit or so
  • ladder
  • garden hose
  • long handle bristle brush
  1. Step 1

Drill a small hole through the center cap of the bottle of Bleach. This converts it into a squirt bottle. You may need to remove the paper seal in the cap so the bleach squirts straight out.

  2. Step 2

Knock off any large chunks of moss. Use a long handled bristle brush. Don't worry if you can't get it all loose. The bleach will take care of that.

  3. Step 3

Wet down the area you need to work on with the hose. Keep the hose on the roof in case you need it. Squirt the bleach over the moss. Thoroughly cover the moss with bleach. Within minutes you'll see the moss turn brown.
After 10 minutes rinse the area down and see how it looks. You may need to repeat this step and few times and brush it more if the moss is really tough.

  4. Step 4

If you don't get all the moss off after this don't worry. The moss is now dead and will turn to dust and wash away by itself in a few weeks

Tips & Warnings
  • Move slowly so you don't slip
  • Do not breath the fumes! Bleach is dangerous!!!
  • If you get bleach on yourself use the hose right away to rinse off
