Learn easy steps to hem pants or repair certain tares without sewing!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • sissors
  • iron on adhesive
  • iron
  1. Step 1

Pre-wash article without using any fabric softener in washer or dryer.

  2. Step 2

Cut your pant legs to desired length. To help figure this, figure how long you need finished hem: you can pin or iron a seem if it helps. How wide is your iron on adhesive? Make sure you leave enough material so that when you fold the hem under there will be 1/8" to 1/4" wider than the iron on adhesive. Measure twice, cut once. Hint: try on pants to check pinned or ironed hem one final time before cutting.

  3. Step 3

Follow directions on adhesive packaging to set your iron heat; usually a wool (medium heat) without steam. Also check the type of fabric to make sure you don't burn or melt it. Try "practicing" piece that was cut off.

  4. Step 4

Place adhesive paper side up on the edge of the hem, so it will be sandwiched in the fold. Press and hold iron on paper side for 2 seconds. Slide iron to a new area and repeat till all surface is bonded. Allow material to cool and pull off paper backing.
Fold hem to final position. Press and hold iron for 8-10 seconds on each section until entire piece is bonded.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hint: try on pants to check pinned or ironed hem one final time before cutting. To repair rips or tares with this method you must be able to overlap material, or cut a patch from other material. Kids love making their own patches.
  • check the type of fabric to make sure you don't burn or melt it. Try using a small piece that was cut off.
  • If you do not pre-wash, there may be residual fabric softener coating the material and the adhesive may not bond.
