Using handwraps is a key safety element in boxing. Your hand is made up of several small bones and a delicate tangle of tissue, and simply put it was not meant to take the steady pressure of hundreds of punches per day. Handwraps bind the hand together into a single block, so putting them on properly is very important to any training program.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Handwraps
  1. Step 1

Put your thumb through the wrap's loop, then run the handwrap under the wrist and wrap the wrist two to three times.

  2. Step 2

Lock up the thumb. On the last wrap of the wrist, bring the wrap from underneath the wrist to over the top of the hand wrap over the top of the hand and run it in front of the thumb. Then bring this under the base of the thumb, and back over the top of the hand.

  3. Step 3

Wrap over the knuckles. Now wrap under the ball of the hand, and up over the knuckles. Do this twice.

  4. Step 4

Wrap up the knuckles. Coming from underneath the hand on your last motion, wrap back under the base of the thumb diagonally over the top of the hand to run the wrap between the pinkie and third finger. Wrap back to the thumb base and repeat for the space between each finger.

  5. Step 5

Cover that by wrapping over the knuckles again, as in Step 3.

  6. Step 6

Bring the wrap back to the wrist for one more wrap up and then tie or velcro it off.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are two useful variants on the traditional handwrap. One is the so-called "Mexican handwrap," which is much longer and therefore can be used to put a few extra loops around the wrist and knuckles. The other are the new "quick-wrap" gloves, that provide most of the protection and support of handwraps. The one drawback of the latter is that they are not as durable as plain old-fashioned handwraps, so expect to have to replace them every 12 to 18 months.
