Dress For Yourself

How do you buy a dress? This simple fashion question sends women (and a few men) down the dark rabbit hole of confusion. Why? Too many choices, too many pants. Women didn't wear pants for 5,000 years, and we're making up for lost time. But before you go shopping learn how to find a dress style that makes you look sensational.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need:

IGNORE THE EXPERTS. There are lots of TV makeover shows telling women what to wear. Every woman should have a little black dress we're told. Well, if we all lived in New York, of course. But we don't. So let's take that concept and personalize it. The perfect dress for you is based on your life, where you live, what you do, and your personal style.

  2. Step 2
    What's Your Dress Style?

WHAT'S YOUR CLOTHING PERSONALITY? Most women live predominantly in one of 12 clothing personalities; Artistic, Sporty, Natural, Classic, Romantic, Sexy, Bohemian, Exotic, Elegant, Fun, Glamorous, or Dramatic. How about you?
Once you identify your clothing personality it’s easier to look at a dress and know if it’s for you.

  3. Step 3

PICK UP A MAGAZINE. If you want to see what's in the stores, scan the star gossip magazines like People or Star. InStyle magazine is good, but look at the dresses individually. We want you to create your own style, not look like a wanna-be. Ignore the "dressing for your age" articles, too. Who wants to be told how to dress when they're 23 or 74?

  4. Step 4

CREATE YOUR OWN LOOK BOOK. Fashion designers do this, why not you? Tear out the dress photos you like and create a fashion file. You'll start to see your preferences, making dress shopping easier. Relish the dresses you don't like, too. They'll help you decide what's important to you. Knowing what you like saves time in the stores. Read the article below to learn how to buy a dress, once you're in the store.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember that when you see ads in fashion magazines the clothing companies are hoping you'll buy their goods. Don't be intimidated by them.
