How to Make a Budget 383 Mopar Race Motor

The Mopar 383 "big block" is the one of the most famous racing engines to come out of the 1960s muscle car era. Generally, building a big block is a more expensive task than building a small block. However, by following the simple tips below, you can build a budget motor and be ready for the race track for under $1,500.

Know that replacing the intake manifold is a relatively easy step with tremendous benefits. First, a quality aluminum intake manifold is much lighter than the stock cast iron manifold. Any reduction of weight is noticeable by the end of the race track. Second, a dual plane manifold will help increase an already impressive stock torque rating of 400 lb-ft. Finally, a quality manifold will significantly increase the air / fuel delivery to the cylinders.

    • 2

Understand that replacing the stock carburetor provides immediate results. However, the danger here is to use a carburetor that flows too much for the engine. When selecting a carburetor for a 383, consider purchasing a four-barrel carburetor that flows between 650 cfm to 750 cfm.

    • 3

Keep in mind that replacing the stock air cleaner with a quality aftermarket unit significantly reduces the burden on the engine, thereby freeing up horsepower. Don't pinch pennies here. Use the best product that you can afford.

    • 4

Keep in mind that after upgrading the intake manifold, carburetor and air cleaner, the engine will breath much easier and therefore make more power. However, because the engine will now use more fuel it is important to upgrade to a quality aftermarket fuel pump and filter. The stock units will be inadequate to properly feed fuel to the engine in a race scenario, particularly at high RPMs.

    • 5

Upgrade the ignition system. Doing so will ensure that the air and fuel mixture will be properly ignited. Improper ignition not only reduces power, but can cause severe engine problems. Components to consider include an aftermarket distributor, coil and spark plug wires.

    • 6

Upgrade the entire exhaust system. Few improvements are as noticeable as a properly functioning quality exhaust system. Replace the stock intake manifolds with headers. A duel exhaust system is a must here, as are quality mufflers.

Dual plane manifolds provide great results in the low and mid rpm range, especially air-gap manifolds which reduce some of the heat created by the block. This provides a denser air mixture to the combustion chamber, resulting in more power. Single plane med-hi rise intake manifolds provide a significant gain in the high rpm range, while sacrificing, low end performance. Comp cams has an excellent free download called "Camquest" which you could use to help decide what performance upgrades will provide the best bang for your buck. Good luck and keep our musclecars running. Don't scrap 'em. -Kerry
