How to Use Obagi NuDerm

Protect and care for your skin to avoid sun damage and other skin problems.

The Obagi NuDerm System consists of skin-care products that solve a variety of skin problems, such as age spots, deep wrinkles, acne scars and sun-damaged skin. There are six main products in the Obagi NuDerm System: a cleanser, toner, fading lotion, exfoliant, cell stimulator and sun block. The system was developed by Dr. Zein E. Obagi, a board-certified dermatologist, and other skin experts. The various Obagi skin products come in the form of a cream, a gel and a serum. The system is available through dermatologists, plastic surgeons and at medical spas, and you can also purchase the Obagi system online for around $300.

Instructions

1. Find a plastic surgeon or dermatologist familiar with Obagi NuDerm. They will assess your skin condition and monitor the use of the Obagi products. Your skin-care expert will design a routine in terms of dosage and frequency for your specific skin problems and needs. While many opt to use the Obagi product without a doctor's supervision, to get the best results with the fewest side effects, consult a specialist.

2. Educate yourself about the various products in the Obagi NuDerm System. It comes in two formulas, one for normal/oily skin and the second for normal/dry skin. In addition to the six main products, there are a few other Obagi products, such as topical Vitamin C, that protects skin from free radicals. There is also an eye cream, moisturizer and a hydrocortisone cream to eliminate itching and irritation.

3. 

   Cleanse skin first.

   Prepare the skin. Clean your face to remove impurities and oil and then tone it to get the skin ready for the next phase.

   A loofah sponge can help exfoliate the skin.

   Exfoliate the skin to remove all dead skin cells and to make the skin smoother. The Obagi fading cream is also used to reduce age spots and uneven skin tone. While the topical Obagi Vitamin C cream is optional, use if recommended by your doctor.

5. Stimulate the skin. This process is accomplished with the Obagi Blender product and tretinoin. These penetrate deeply into the skin layers to stimulate the production of collagen and elasticity at the cellular level. This makes the face softer and more supple.

6. Protect the skin. Use the Obagi sun block to protect the skin from UVA and UVB rays that cause skin damage.

7. Maintain the routine. To continually renew the skin, follow your doctor's advice. If using the products on your own, follow the directions and visit the Obagi website if you have questions.

8. Be patient. It took years or decades of sun damage, pollution, and poor diets to age your skin. Even with the Obagi skin products overnight Improvements are not possible, but you will see visible signs of improvement in four to six weeks with proper use of the Obagi products.
