One of the most misunderstood things about the Latter Day Saint faith (Mormons) is the way they are told to eat in the Word of Wisdom. This set of instructions that the founder of the LDS Church, their prophet Joseph Smith said he received from God in 1833 has been found to be based on emerging food science. Want to be healthier? Thinner? Smarter? Follow the Word of Wisdom!

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The Word of Wisdom, was given to the LDS Prophet Joseph Smith in 1822. It teaches that followers are to eat healthy foods and avoid harmful substances, including alcohol, tobacco, tea, coffee, and harmful or habit-forming drugs. This is a show of faith they they claim that God in turn will use to bestow blessings of health, wisdom, and great knowledge.

  2. Step 2

What many Mormons don't follow is some of the finer points of the Word of Wisdom that direct the faithful on WHEN and WHAT to eat, not only to avoid harmful substances. The Word of Wisdom is also often referred to as Section 89. The following is a brief overview.

  3. Step 3

No alcohol. It is clear that you should not drink alcohol except during sacrament and sacrament wine should be made by you. It even goes so far as to say that strong (i.e. alcohol) drinks are not for drinking but for washing the body.

  4. Step 4

No smoking! Tobacco is not for the body through smoking or eating but should be used for a poultice or other medicinal for cattle. This seems to include chewing tobacco.

  5. Step 5

No coffee or tea. Although this section only refers to hot drinks it was clarified later through prophecy that it includes all substances that contain caffeine.

  6. Step 6

Eat fruits and vegetables in season. This section also claims that you should eat these things with thanksgiving and prudence.

  7. Step 7

You can eat meat (including fowl and fish) but only in when there is nothing else to eat such as in winter, cold or during famine.

  8. Step 8

Grains can be eaten any time by man or animals but wild animals are to be eaten only during extreme hunger.

  9. Step 9

And you will be blessed with health and knowledge.

Tips & Warnings
  • Eat fruits, vegetables, leafy greens and herbs in season and as much as you like.
  • Eat meat sparingly, if at all and only in winter or during a famine.
  • Only eat wild game if you are starving.
  • Eat as much grains as you wish at any time.
  • Don't drink any alcohol
  • Don't smoke any tobacco, though you can use it medicinally as a poultice
