How to Create a Web Page Using Notepad

Notepad, a program that is included with most versions of Microsoft Windows including Windows Vista, is a very simple, easy-to-use text editor. You can use Notepad to build basic web pages.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Knowledge of how to use basic Windows applications
  1. Step 1
    Opening Notepad in Windows

    You can run Notepad by selecting Start, run, and then enter 'Notepad' and select OK.

  2. Step 2
    Open a program using Windows Vista

    To run a program in Windows Vista, enter the program name in the text box and select ENTER.

    Every web page requires an HTML tag pair. There is much more that can be added to the HTML tag but that information is content for another article. To find out more refer to http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_html.asp and http://www.w3schools.com/tags/att_html_xmlns.asp.

    Add the HEAD and TITLE tags. The title appears in the upper left hand part of a browser window. The HEAD tag area is used for scripting and style settings which may be applied to your web page. Refer to http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_head.asp for more
    information.

    Add the BODY tag and save the document. Select File, Save As from the Notepad menu. Enter quotes around the file name and select 'All Files' for file types.

    Enter a H2 tag pair with content as a heading for your web page.

    Open your page in a web browser to view your web page.

    Add a P (paragraph) tag pair and content.

    Open your web page in your browser again to view it (Refresh or reload your web page to update changes).

    Add a second paragraph using a P tag pair and view your web page again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Congratulations! You created a web page using Notepad. For more information on the use of other HTML tags consult http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp.
  • Note in some of the graphics in this article, the closing paragraph tags were made upper case P. HTML will process correctly but it is a good practice to make sure that all tags are lowercase. This is important as one of the requirements for using XHTML (another eHow probably :))
