Here is some information on how to diagnose some tune-up issues and take you through some steps on how to take care of them with a simple tune up.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Access to an ODB I or II scanner. Some cars that are pre 1997 will need an ODB I and cars 98 or newer will require the II scanner.
  • Spark Plugs and Spark Plug wires
  • Fuel Filter
  • Oil and Oil Filter
  • Air Filter
  • O2 Sensors (if required)
  1. Step 1

One thing you will need to do is to Run what is called a ODB I (96 and older vehicles) or II (97 and newer vehicles) scan on your car. This can be done for free at most Auto parts stores such as O'Reilly's or Advanced Auto Parts Stores. It's free and they can even check your alternator and battery system as well if you need it.

  2. Step 2

Most codes are thrown or discovered when your Service Engine Soon light is on and most common tune-up problems are; cylinder misfires or 02 sensors not functioning correctly and usually if this happens it is typically time for a tune-up.

  3. Step 3

Your Basic Tune up is this: Replace your Wires and Plugs and O2 Sensors; Air Filter; Change oil if you have reached your interval; change your fuel filter and run fuel injector cleaner or gas treatment to clean injectors and replace your PCV Valve if your car has one. Also if you haven't done so already a coolant flush and refill is always a good idea.
