How to Run a Football Defense: 4-4
This is a well-balanced defense with great flexibility. It has the advantage of four linebackers, but sacrifices the integrity of the line.
Instructions
-
-
1
Set a tackle to either side of the center. Left tackle blocks the outside shoulder of the opposing guard. Right tackle shifts to block the inside shoulder of his guard. Left end is positioned head-up on tight end.
-
2
Direct right end to block at outside shoulder of tackle.
-
-
3
Start four linebackers 3 to 4 yards behind the line - one behind each tackle, and one 3 to 4 yards to either side of the ends.
-
4
Set two corners in your defense secondary 7 yards off the line of scrimmage and opposite any receivers, usually the split end and flanker.
-
5
Leave a free safety 9 to 12 yards behind the line of scrimmage, between the center linebackers.

Tips & Warnings
The two center linebackers must read the guards.
This is a bad defense against a power-off tackle play. With a scattered defensive line, it is easier for the offense to double-team and overpower. Don't let the linebackers get fooled by false runs, which will draw them to the sides and away from their primary job of protecting a break through the line.
Football is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.

Actually you don't have to run it that way. You can have the Def. Ends in a 2 point stance and teach them to hit the "B" Gaps between the Guards and Tackles. The Def. Tackles can hit the "A" Gaps to "Double Team" the Center. This automatically forces the inside run to sweep outside and the 4 linebackers are patiently waiting to deliver the big hit. -

In a 4-4 defense you cannot allow weak side backers to over pursue. This creates a major cutback lane for any decent running back. The backside linebackers have to honor any cutbacks reverses, throwbacks, and tight end pass releases. Backside linebackers should be coached to shuffle their fee and not crossover, to keep them in the area of play. -

This defense can also use a strong safety instead of an extra linebacker. This allows for better coverage in passing situations while still attacking the line of scrimmage.
