Tackle stains with a detergent mixture first. Mix ¼ tsp. of hand soap or bleach-free dish soap in a bucket with 1 quart of warm water. Pour the detergent mixture into a spray bottle. Spray the stain and blot it up with a clean white cloth. Many stains can be removed with detergent, making it a good first line of defense.

Remove wine, beer, spaghetti sauce and blood stains with a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar. Spray the stain until it's saturated and leave it for 15 minutes. Blot the stain with a damp sponge and rinse the area by dabbing it with a cloth soaked in warm water. Put a thick layer of paper towels on the spot and weigh them down with a couple of heavy books until it dries.

Mix a solution of ammonia and water to remove mustard, egg, ketchup, vomit or urine. Put equal parts of water and ammonia in a spray bottle and spray the spot, but don't saturate so much that the carpet backing will be wet. Blot the spot with paper towels and let the area air dry.

Treat greasy stains such as gravy, salad dressing, lipstick or crayon with rubbing alcohol. Pour the rubbing alcohol on a white cloth or white paper towel and blot until the stain disappears. Work carefully, blotting in one direction to prevent the stain from spreading.
