How to Run a Football Defense: 6-2
This is a strong line formation meant to put pressure on the offensive passing game. The center is left uncontested as the nose guard is shifted to a guard position.
Instructions
-
-
1
Set a guard at either side of the center, head-up on offensive guards.
-
2
Position a tackle outside either guard to block head-up on opposing tackles.
-
-
3
Place an end outside the left tackle, blocking head-up on the tight end.
-
4
Set a second end to the outside of the right tackle.
-
5
Set two corners in your defense secondary, 7 yards off the line of scrimmage and opposite any receivers, usually the split end and flanker.
-
6
Position a linebacker behind each guard, 3 to 4 yards back from the line of scrimmage.
-
7
Leave a free safety 9 to 12 yards behind the line of scrimmage, centered between the linebackers.

Tips & Warnings
Linebackers need their eyes glued to the ball.
You've removed the strong safety from the backfield to accomplish this defense. The free safety will find himself in the spotlight if the offense breaks through.

Line the two nose tackles up in the A gaps to force the guards and center to deal with them. This keeps the linebackers free to run to the ball. Set the tackles head up on the O-tackles and slant them to the outside shoulder. The ends line up outside the tight end or flanker if he is in close. Do not allow the end to penetrate more than 2 yards and do not turn into the middle until the ball commits toward the line of scrimmage. He needs the outside hand free to string out the outside run and spill it toward the corner back. If he over penetrates that creates the off tackle hole under the end. That single safety has to watch for tight ends or flankers going out for passes. -

This is a tough defense to run if the team you are playing runs off tackle. Any double tight end sets or single/pro tight end sets with two backs become a problem because of the angles the tight end and tackle have to block the end and linebacker. Try varying where you set the ends (off the ball, on the ball, etc.) and find a combination that works and adjust accordingly. -

The best way to run the 62 is attacking through the gaps. Bull rush the nose guards and tackles, contain with the ends. All players should line up in the gaps. Even the linebackers are close to the line of scrimmage in the guard tackle gap. The key is shooting the gaps and sprinting to the ball. They will have little time to get a play going if you can get into the backfield before the play even gets started. X X X X X X X X X X X O O O O O O O O O O O
