Understand the different karat ratings - 24K gold is 100% gold. Usually this is not made into jewelry because it's so soft. Sometimes you will see 22K gold jewelry but this is rare. Normally 24K comes in bar form. --- 18K gold is 75% gold and commonly used in rings and other heavier jewelry. The gold is mixed with either silver or copper. ---- 14K is approximately 58% gold and is the most common form of gold in the U.S. market. This gold is mixed with silver, copper, or tin. ---- 10K gold is 42% gold and as such is the least valuable. ----------------------- In order to be legally sold as gold in the United States, the item must be 10K or higher. Anything less cannot be called gold.

Understand gold pricing - The purer the gold, the more cash can be had for your gold. Gold pricing is based on the karat and the dwt. Dwt is 1/20th of a troy ounce or 1.555 grams. -----------------------------------
Bear in mind that if you have a large piece in good shape, or a designer bracelet, your item may be even more valuable. Be sure to have an appraiser look at your jewelry before you decide to sell your gold for scrap.

Visit your local jeweler first if you're selling your gold for scrap. Get an estimate then compare the cash your jeweler is willing to pay versus what Brokengold.com or other scrap gold buyers are willing to pay for your gold.

Consider hosting a Home Gold Party. - While you and your friends socialize, an expert evaluates and perhaps purchases everyone's gold. You and your friends should have already done their homework prior to the party to make sure that you're getting the best price for your gold.
