If you color your hair, you may need some ways to cover gray hair roots temporarily. You want your hair color to last, but those pesky roots start showing up quickly. Gray hair, which is nonporous, has a hard time holding on to color. Here are a few way to temporarily cover gray hair roots, and postpone another expensive and time-consuming trip to the salon.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Postpone the need to cover gray hair roots. Ask your stylist to apply good old peroxide, which is a strong bleaching agent, to your roots before applying your color. This will make the hair more porous and better able to grab the color.

  2. Step 2

Use gentle shampoos and conditioner made for color treated hair. They will add moisture to your locks and won't strip away the color as quickly as regular products.

  3. Step 3

Apply a color extension treatment which contains ceramide, a product that will help the color last. The treatments, which will help cover your gray hair roots, are usually for sale at salons and beauty supply stores.

  4. Step 4

Buy a gray hair root touch-up kit, available at drug stores and super stores. It's applied with a brush directly to your roots, and it only takes about ten minutes. It won't be the exact same shade as your color, but it will blend well. It's a good way to cover roots, and will last several weeks.

  5. Step 5

Try color mascara from beauty supply shops. Find the color closest to yours and just dab it on for a quick fix to cover gray hair roots. The mascara will wash out with your next shampoo.

  6. Step 6

Pull out your eye shadow for a cheap and easy way to temporarily cover gray hair roots. Smudging on powder eye shadow will give you a quick fix. Find a color similar to your hair and give it a try. It will wash out easily with a shampoo.

Tips & Warnings
  • Changing your hair part, either to the other side or in a zigzag form is another option. This won't cover your gray hair roots, but it will disguise them.
