A metal window sash can be stuck, squeak or become frozen shut during cold weather. This easy method to lubricate a metal window sash will prevent sticking, put an end to squeaking and reduce the possibility of the window becoming inoperable during cold weather. The waxes and solid oils in bar soap do not freeze so the window will not freeze shut from cold weather and condensation. Unlike solid bar soap, liquid oils and sprays can drip and leave a mess. Lubricating with a regular bar of soap works very well and leaves no mess behind.

  • Bar soap
  1. Step 1

    Open the window.

Clean and dry the track completely.

Repeat the process of opening, rubbing bar soap and closing the window until the window slides freely in the track.

  7. Step 7

Repeat annually or whenever the window does not slide freely in the sash track.
