Cockroaches are the bane of human existence. We spend millions of dollar every year on pest control services, noxious sprays, and Roach Motels. They're gone for awhile, but they inevitably come back. If you've had it up to your eyeballs with fighting those filthy beasts, here's a sure-fire killer cockroach bait recipe that you can make yourself using common household ingredients.

This bait recipe was passed along to me 20 years ago by the head chef at a 4-star restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia. His kitchen was so clean you could eat off the floor, but it didn't keep the cockroaches away. This bait did the trick for his restaurant and it worked for me, too. The bait not only kills the cockroaches that are attracted to eat it, these cockroaches will carry this bait back to their young. This really helps to control or eliminate your roach problems. Give it a try. You'll be glad you did.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 Tbsp. solid vegetable shortening or lard
  • 1/2 small onion finely diced
  • 1 Tsp. sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. Boric acid powder
  1. Step 1

Finely dice 1/2 a small onion (about 3 Tbsp.) and place into a small mixing bowl.

  2. Step 2

Add shortening or lard, sugar, and boric acid to the bowl with the onions.

  3. Step 3

Using a metal fork, mix the ingredients together very well.

  4. Step 4

Use a metal spoon to scoop up about 1/2 to 1 tsp. of this mixture, place on an old jar lid or small dish. You should be able to get 4 or 5 of these bait dishes from a single batch of this recipe.

  5. Step 5

Place a bait dish in an area where you frequently see cockroaches. Make sure it is well out of reach of children and pets. I put it inside cupboards, tucked away in a far corner, in the kitchen, bathroom, and garage.

  6. Step 6

Replenish the bait dishes at least monthly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Boric acid powder is the one ingredient most of us do not commonly keep in our medicine chest anymore. It can be purchased at your local drug store. If you have trouble finding it, ask your pharmacist.
  • Boric acid is poisonous if ingested. Handle it with care.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after making your bait.
  • Be sure to put the bait in an area that is out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Use only non-porous (metal, glass) utensils to mix this bait. Only these can be thoroughly washed and made safe for later use.
