Step 1
Verify that the electrical outlet the washing machine is plugged into is receiving power. Make sure that the breaker didn't trip or the fuse isn't blown for that circuit. Also make sure the cord to the washer is plugged in to the outlet.

Step 2
Verify that the lid to the washer closes properly, if it does not, or the sensor that detects the lid is closed is not being depressed, the washer will not start.

Step 3
Make sure that the control knob is set to the correct position for operation. Some knobs have to be depressed after they are spun to the starting position to begin operation.

Step 4
Verify that both the hot and cold water faucet knobs are turned on that connect the hot and cold water lines to the washer.

Step 5
If the washer you own is newer and has a display on it, it may display a diagnostic code when it is not functioning properly, which can be looked up in the owner's manual or through the manufacturer's website for further diagnostic and repair information.
