Step 1
Do you own a blu-ray player, PS3 or XBox 360? If so, you'll likely want to look at 1080p capable TV's, they'll give you the highest resolution possible to take full advantage of the aforementioned high end electronics. 1080i TV's offer a lower resolution in that the image is interlaced instead of progressive scan at 1080 resolution.
-
Step 2
Take into consideration the available technologies, LCD and Plasma, and what function you're looking for the tv to fill. If you want a smaller tv for say the bedroom, you'll likely be looking at LCD tv's.
-
Step 3
Check out articles and reviews online to see how customers rate the tv's, narrow it down to the size you think fits your need, and then narrow it down to a few manufacturers that's products interest you the most.
-
Step 4
Compare prices online through sites like pricegrabber.com, and then go to your local electronics store to actually see in person the picture quality differences in the sets that you had narrowed down to from looking online to see which one looks the best to you. Play with the display settings and listen to the built in speakers if you don't plan on buying a surround sound system to use with the tv, as the speaker quality varies greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer and model to model.

on 1/3/2009 Good tips. Everybody is buying TV's that are too large for the room. If you will be sitting 6 feet away from the screen a 50" screen will look awful.
