A well-built driveway base is the key to low maintenance and a long lifespan. Use the right equipment to shape a firm foundation for the drive. Provide drainage that directs water away from the driveway bed. Add a geotextile barrier layer for soil stabilization and to minimize erosion. Top it all off with a good mix of larger rough gravel and small fine gravel that will compact into a solid surface. These steps are the underpinning of a long-lasting driveway.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Measuring tape
  • Stakes
  • String
  • Tractor
  • Excavator attachment
  • Backhoe attachment
  • Geotextile fabric
  • Crusher-run gravel
  1. Step 1

Identify the starting point where your driveway will join the road. Pinpoint the area where your drive will end at the garage or parking spot.

  2. Step 2

Measure a minimum 8-foot wide length at the starting point and pound a stake into the ground at each end. Outline the edges of the driveway with string tied to stakes.

  3. Step 3

Remove stumps, roots and all plant material from the driveway area. Take away boulders and large rocks.

  4. Step 4

Scrape topsoil away from the marked area using a tractor with an excavator attachment. Cut down to subsoil. Use the excavator blade to create an A-shaped crown up the center with the sides slightly sloping toward the edges of the drive.

  5. Step 5

Dig a ditch along the edge of any inclined sections using a backhoe attachment on the tractor. Ensure that the ditch is flat-bottomed and wide enough to carry away water runoff

  6. Step 6

Lay out geotextile fabric on the entire surface of the driveway. Use small rocks or shovels full of gravel to hold the geotextile material in place.

  7. Step 7

Dump a 5-inch layer of crusher-run gravel on top of the geotextile. Spread the mix of large and fine gravel across the entire surface of the driveway.

  8. Step 8

Compact the gravel by driving equipment and vehicles up and down the driveway.

Tips & Warnings
  • Excavation attachments and backhoe attachments may be rented at an hourly or daily rate from local farm supply companies. Geotextile fabric that is woven is recommended for driveway use rather than the non-woven style.
  • Obtain proper permits from city and county officials before you build the driveway to ensure that you will not be assessed fines or be forced to remove the driveway.
