How to Buy and Sell Website Domain Names
A domain name, which is part of your website uniform resource locator (URL), can be purchased or sold at various domain-selling marketplaces. Many domain registrars have marketplaces associated with their websites, so you can register a new domain, buy an established domain or sell your domain name on the same site. Domain name marketplaces like Sedo provide a buying and selling service for domains. You can also purchase expired or expiring domains through another type of domain buying service.

1
Compare the various domain marketplaces available, such as Sedo.com and Godaddy.com auctions. Different marketplaces offer different services for selling and buying domains. The main areas of comparison you need to check are the listing services offered; the commission the site takes or charges for the sale; the activity of the site; and the ease of use. If you are looking for the largest amount of buyers and sellers, a more active site provides you with greater opportunities. If you're hoping to find some hidden domain gems, you may want to look for smaller marketplaces.

2
Register for an account at the listing service. Most services just need your basic information and you can sign up for free. You may or may not need to pay an upfront fee for listing your domain if you are selling a site, but that depends on the service you're using.

3
Post your website for sale or look through the listings of currently available domains. You'll need to provide your asking price, the domain name, a quick description of the domain and any traffic information available when posting your domain. If you are browsing domains to buy, many marketplaces categorize the domains in different sections so you can easily find the ones you wish to purchase. A domain purchase is generally only for the domain name, without a website attached.

4
Follow the on-screen instructions the marketplace provides when you buy or sell a domain. The marketplace acts as a third-party between the buyer and seller, except in situations where the registrar is selling domains directly.
