Step 1
Buy fresh whole coffee beans. Neighborhood coffee shops can be a great source of coffee beans. Natural foods stores may also have great beans. For the freshest roast, buy a smaller amount of beans. The idea is to try to use the beans within a one week period. Store coffee beans in a clean, airtight container. Whole beans can be stored on your counter top or in a cabinet, away from direct light.

Step 2
Buy a coffee grinder. One of the best ways to have a fresh, flavorful cup of coffee is to buy whole coffee beans and grind the beans right before you make the coffee.
-
Step 3
Make sure that your equipment is clean. Leftover coffee grinds and oils can build up over time. Some recommend cleaning a coffee maker at least once every two to three months. (To clean a coffee maker, add one part vinegar to two parts water and cycle it through your coffee maker. Once the first cycle has run, allow the coffee maker to cool for at least 20 to 30 minutes. Next, run at least two cycles of cold water through the coffee maker to rinse out the vinegar water solution. Remember to allow the coffee maker to cool for at least 20 to 30 minutes in between cycles. Do not add cold water to a hot coffee pot or coffee maker.)

Step 4
