How to Clean Glass Without Liquid Cleaner

While "I don't do windows" may be an old, cliched joke, it nevertheless speaks volumes about how mundane a task cleaning glass is. Looking back on your work to see dried streaks of liquid glass cleaner in ugly, opaque swirls doesn't particularly help matters. There is a better and faster method, though you'll probably do a double-take at the next sentence.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a piece of fine mesh steel wool in your fingertips, and rub the window or mirror glass in a clockwise circular motion. Do so with reasonable firmness, applying even pressure on the glass while "buffing."

    • 2

Continue in the same way with other glass surfaces, replacing steel wool pads as needed (the pads will eventually disintegrate as they are being used).

    • 3

Do not spray the glass surfaces before or afterward with any sort of cleaner. It isn't necessary, and will only make your windows and mirrors look worse when used in conjunction with fine mesh steel wool.

Tips & Warnings

  • If working indoors, you may want to place a drop cloth under the window or mirror you're cleaning, as the steel wool will produce little filings as it's used. If you've used the steel wool on indoor glass surfaces, take the drop cloth outside to shake off the steel filings, or sweep or vacuum them thoroughly from the floor.

  • Use fine mesh steel wool only! Anything rougher will damage glass surfaces permanently. When cleaning glass indoors with fine mesh steel wool, make sure to wear a face mask to avoid breathing in loose steel filings. Avoid cleaning indoor glass with steel wool around areas where food is prepared. If cleaning in such an area is necessary, cover the area with a drop cloth, disposable plastic bag or tablecloth.
