Many firms hire capital managers to oversee the preparation of investment activities and implement cash management strategies. Capital managers may also monitor cash flow to determine if loans are needed to meet the organization's cash flow needs. But it may be hard for individuals who are interested in working capital management to know where to start, so here is some information about where to begin.

Instructions

    • 1

Get your bachelor's degree. Most companies that hire individuals to work capital management prefer bachelors' degrees in finance, accounting, business administration and economics. Some companies prefer to hire individuals with masters' degrees, since the higher degrees will assist future capital mangers in developing analytical skills and financial analysis experience.

    • 2

Seek an internship. Contact local companies and ask if you can intern with a capital manager. This will give you the work experience needed to be an appealing candidate upon graduation. If you aren't sure where to find companies to intern with, contact the American Association of Bankers for a list of companies in your area that deal with capital management (see Resources below).

    • 3

Develop an understanding of international finance. Capital managers need to be aware of international financial affairs because this area is increasingly important to the United States economy. Read publications such as the "Wall Street Journal" and "Money" magazine to keep up with current trends.

    • 4

Develop your interpersonal skills. To be a successful capital manager, you need to have strong communications skills. You will be working within a team and managing relationships with individuals on several corporate levels in your organization. Seek communication courses while completing your undergraduate education.

    • 5

Seek certification with professional organizations. Once you have 2 years of experience, you can apply for professional certifications such as the Chartered Financial Analyst certification. Contact the Chartered Financial Analysts Institute to set up an exam. Once you pass the exam, you will receive certification and will be more attractive to employers (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • Capital managers need to have a good understand of compliance procedures. Keep up to date on regulatory procedures and changes. Because many businesses that hire capital mangers work with international companies, it's helpful to know a foreign language.
