There is so much to complain about: the economy, the boss, the weather, and even the shoes that are killing your feet! One can't help but complain when everyone around is doing it too. The news, for example, is one big complaint letter about the nature of the world. How does one go against the norm and just stop it? It's not easy, but it can be done.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

What is your motivation? Why do you want to stop complaining? Are you feeling excess stress, not happy, drained by the end of the day, unhealthy, tired of being around negative people or like the life force is being sucked out of you? What do you want instead? Write it down.

  2. Step 2

Make a list of people and activities that bring out the "complainer" in you. How can you avoid these interactions?

  3. Step 3

FOR DEALING WITH YOUR FELLOW COMPLAINERS, memorize some neutral statements like, wow!, really?, that's something, you don't say?, amazing, etc... These are to be used with those people you live or work closely with, so that you can still be around them people, but avoid the complaining. Eventually, they'll stop engaging you because it's no longer fun. In addition, make sure you always have an exit strategy. For example, you have to get off the phone to do something else.

  4. Step 4

FOR DEALING WITH YOURSELF AS CHIEF COMPLAINER, put yourself on a diet. Begin by limiting yourself to 10 minutes of complaining per day. You will do this complaining at the end of the day in a journal. Write down everything that bugged you. You do not have to keep the note, so be honest. You can throw it away. This is a great bathroom exercise if you live with the person you're complaining about.

  5. Step 5
Be peace. Stop Complaining. Feel Better!

Be peace. Stop Complaining. Feel Better!

This is the most important step. Remember that peace begins with you. You have a tremendous responsibility in the world. It is easy to complain about the government or "those" people. The truth is, we are all connected. If you are not creating peace in your work place, home or community, how can there be real peace anywhere? You are that important to the whole. Take full responsibility for your actions. Find the good in everything. You'll feel so much better!
