There are several Treasury Department or federal tax forms used by businesses. Read below to understand the purpose of each them.

  1. Step 1

    Form SS-4 - Application for Employer Identification Number. This form is used to obtain and employer identification number from the IRS for purposes of social security, withholding and federal tax returns. Also churches with employees must apply for an identification number.

  2. Step 2

    Form W-2 - Wage and Tax Statement. This form is used to report the annual income and withheld income and FICA taxes to employees. This form must be issued by all businesses, including nonprofit organizations,such as churches.

  3. Step 3

    Form W-3 - Transmittal of Income and Tax Statements. This form is used to transfer the amount of employee W-2 forms to the Social Security Administration. The income is totaled on the W-3.

  4. Step 4

    W4 - Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate. This form is issued to the employees so that they can report withholding allowances. This information is used by the employer to determine the amount of taxes to withhold from employee checks.

  5. Step 5

    Form 940 - Employer's Annual Federal Unemployment Tax Return. This form is used by employers to compute and report unemployment taxes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be very careful when executing these forms and should an error be found after the form has been issued they may be amended.
  • Be sure that all necessary forms have been executed because "ignorance of the law is no excuse".

on 1/4/2009 Nice review of some of the commonly used tax returns. Filling them out is a bit harder though.
