You can buy a complete lamp-making kit at any hardware or electric appliance store. This is much more safe and efficient than attempting to wire a lamp on your own.

You can find a suitable log on a hiking trail or camping trip as long as it is legal to collect wood. Pick any one that suits your fancy. Some logs have gnarled knots or interesting shapes. If you are a beginner, try and pick a log that is easy to work with. Decide now if you want to peel the bark off of your lamp or not.
