Get College Textbooks For Free

With this guide you will learn how to find most of your college textbooks for free.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Create a list of textbooks you will need. Full title as well as the main author will be helpful

  2. Step 2

Go to your school's library's website and search the book catalog for the first textbook on the list.

  3. Step 3

The textbook is at your library, check to make sure it is the edition that is needed for your class.

  4. Step 4

If the textbook is not in your library then determine how to do an inter-library search. How to do this varies by the library and what library system it is a part of. Furthermore, each website is different. Thus, if you are having trouble locating how to do the search, contact your librarian for assistance

  5. Step 5

Once you have located the inter-library search, search for your textbook again. Most likely some library in the network will have the book.

  6. Step 6

Once you have located the book, request an inter-library loan on it. Again, the process is different for each library and library network. Ask your librarian if you need assistance

  7. Step 7

The length of an inter-library loan varies, be sure to either renew the item or return it before the due date. You can always request it again (or from another school)

  8. Step 8

You may also want to check with local public libraries to see if they (or another library in their network) have the textbook.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sometimes there is very little difference between textbook editions. Check with teacher of the class to find out if a previous edition of the textbook is acceptable
  • If you cannot find the textbook, try searching by author or by ISBN. Some libraries have better search capabilities than others.
  • If you simply cannot find the textbook, it may be the case that none of the libraries have it. You may have to purchase this book from the bookstore or online (see another guide on tips)
  • Remember that any book gotten through a library is not yours. Do not mark in it or damage it in any way as you may be fined for the damages
