Make Your Own Pop-Up Books

Artists have been creating pop-up books for many years. Historians trace the first pop-up books back to the 13th century. These books have been used to make astrology predictions, tell fortunes and demonstrate stories. Many individuals are interested in creating their own pop-up books but aren't sure where to start. Here's how to make your own pop-up books.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 9x12 construction paper (several sheets)
  • Glue stick
  • Crayons or paints
  1. Step 1

Fold your 9x12 construction paper in half. This will create the cover of your book. Once folded, decorate the cover with paints or markers. You can also cut out artwork and paste it to the cover.

  2. Step 2

Decide how many pages you will include. For example, if you plan to have 10 pages, fold 5 pages in half. Put glue inside of the creases of each piece of paper and attach the pages one by one. Allow the book to dry for 2-3 hours.

  3. Step 3

Write your story in the pages. Once the glue has dried, you can begin to write your story. Carefully write your story on the inside pages of the pop-up book. Remember to leave room for your pop-up characters.

  4. Step 4

Cut out your characters. Decide which characters will be featured on each page. Draw and cut out each character. Leave a little extra room at the bottom of each character so you can adhere to the book.

  5. Step 5

Glue your characters into the story. Fold the bottom of your character and add a little glue. Adhere the character inside of your storybook by pressing firmly while attaching. Repeat this process for each character on each page of the book.

Tips & Warnings
  • Allow your pages to dry completely. Work on one page at a time when gluing in your pop-up characters. Completing a couple of pages each day for a week allows adequate drying time.
  • Make sure not to rush. Making pop-up books takes time. Write your story out ahead of time and make sure not to rush the gluing process. Being patient will allow you to create a nice finished product.
