Step 1
Take a shopping list with you. Studies have shown that taking a shopping list with you not only saves you money, but helps you maintain a healthy weight because you’ll be less likely to buy items you do not need. Before going grocery shopping take a quick inventory of what you already have, and add items to your list that you actually need. If you have half a jar of peanut butter left do not go out and buy more.
-
Step 2
Clip coupons and actually use them. It’s not enough to just clip them out of your newspaper each week. You need to actually take them with you and use them! Locate the stores that accept double and triple coupons, and shop there first.
-
Step 3
Avoid shopping at stores that sell in bulk. While this is good practice for large families, it does not help save money for the average family. Buying a 50 gallon tub of cheddar cheese will not help you save money on groceries. These places are too hard to resist, and you end up leaving with a lot more than you bargained for.

Step 4
Stick to a budget. Plan out how much money you want to spend on what, and don’t go over it. Staying to a budget will help you save money because you won’t have extra money to hit up the junk food isles. You’ll be healthier from eliminating the junk food, and by doing so you won’t spend extra money visiting the doctor as much.

Step 5
Buy discounted food; shop at your local bargain stores before going to your super center. Not only will you save money, but you’ll have more money to spend on other things. Check out the discounted meat isle of your local supermarket for even more savings.
