Like the slant, this is a quick pass play. Chances are increased here as the offense sends out two receivers for a short completion.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Set the offense in a split-back formation. Place seven players on the line. Position from the quarterback's left: split end, a space of 5 yards, tackle, guard, center, guard, tackle, tight end. Two running backs stand ready a yard behind the quarterback, one slightly to either side. Finally, a flanker is set 5 yards to the right of the tight end and 1 yard off the line of scrimmage.

  2. Step 2

    Hike the ball.

  3. Step 3

Send the tackles, guards and center blocking straight on, keeping their mirrors engaged and repelled.

  4. Step 4

Send both running backs a step forward to help protect the quarterback.

  5. Step 5

Send the split end in a post pattern (straight out, then cutting toward goalposts).

  6. Step 6

Send the tight end straight for 5 yards, then breaking 45 degrees to the outside toward the right corner.

  7. Step 7

Send the flanker to run a short curl - four steps, then a quick turn to the outside, facing back toward the quarterback.

  8. Step 8

Have the quarterback take the hike, preferably throwing to the flanker. The tight end is a secondary choice.

Tips & Warnings
  • The idea for the tight end and flanker is to double-team the right corner - in part to give the quarterback a choice, but more importantly, to draw the corner's attention to the tight end, rather than to the safer and shorter pass completion to the flanker.
  • Follow the steps assuming your line faces a basic 5-2 defense (five players on the line of scrimmage, two linebackers behind, a corner on either end, and two safeties in back). Adjust the blocking slightly to counter varying defenses.
  • Football is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
