Step 1
Improve your Soil - Add organic material in the form of compost or fertilizer to soil before planting. This will improve water penetration and retention and increase fertility. A 3-inch layer of mulch applied to topsoil after planting can drastically reduce water needs by helping retain moisture and discouraging the growth of weeds, which compete with garden plants for water.
-
Step 2
Plan before Planting - Study the characteristics of your site, including sun, shade and wind exposure. Learn more about your soil. Then plan before planting. Create planting zones and group plants which require similar conditions and have similar water needs. Keep your irrigation system in mind, and place plants which require more water closer to the water source. Consider use of drip irrigation or low-flow sprinkler heads to avoid water runoff.
-
Step 3
Choose Appropriate Plants - Select plants that grow best in your area with a low water supply. These will most likely be the native plants of your area. There is a wealth of information on native plants online and at your local bookstore and library.
-
Step 4
Limit the Lawn - Reduce the amount of lawn on your site - turf grass is one of the most demanding plants in terms of water usage. Alternative groundcovers and native perennials are good replacements for some areas of lawn.
-
Step 5
Water Efficiently - Grouping plants in zones will allow you to water each area only when water is needed. Be aware of the changing needs of plants for water, based on the time of year and maturity of the root system. Create a watering schedule which is based on necessity. Set a timer when watering to eliminate over watering. Water in the early part of the day to help reduce moisture loss through evaporation and wind.
-
Step 6
Maintain your Garden - Weeding, thinning, pruning, fertilization and pest control help keep plants healthy, and healthy plants require less water. Keep your irrigation system in good repair and watch for leaks.
